Blossom Dearie - She Is Hip!

One of my favourite jazz chanteuses, Blossom Dearie, died a couple of weeks ago, aged 82. Here's Doug Ramsey's piece on his Rifftides site, he's much better handling words than me. And on AAJ, you can read up a short bio.

See, I'm hip. I'm no square.
I'm alert, I'm awake, I'm aware.
I am always on the scene.
Making the rounds, digging the sounds.
I read People Magazine.
'Cuz I'm hip.
Like, dig! I'm in step.
When it was hip to be hep, I was hep.
I don't blow but I'm a fan.
Look at me swing. Ring a ding-ding.
I even call my girlfriend "man," 'cuz I'm hip.
Every Saturday night with my suit buttoned tight and my suedes on
I'm getting my kicks digging arty French flicks with my shades on.
I'm too much. I'm a gas.
I am anything but middle class.
When I hang around the band,
Popping my thumbs, digging the drums,
Squares don't seem to understand
Why I flip. They're not hip like I'm hip.
Scatting
I'm hip!

I'm on top of every trend.
Look at me go. Vo-dee-o-do.
Sammy Davis knew my friend.
I'm hip, but not weird.
Like, you notice, I don't wear a beard.
Beards were in but now they're out.
They had they're day. Now they're passé.
Just ask me if you're in doubt, 'cuz I'm hip.
Now I'm deep into Zen meditation and macrobiotics,
And as soon as I can I intend to get into narcotics.
'Cuz I'm cool as a cuke.
I'm a cat, I'm a card, I'm a kook, kook, kook.
I get so much out of life.
Really, I do. Skoo ba dee boo.
One more time play "Mack the Knife."
Let 'er rip. I may flip, but I'm hip.

Trevor Watts & Veryan Weston - Roma 2003

Here's an afterthought to my recent re-post of Veryan Weston's solo concert at TonArt Bern 2003.

Read more about Veryan Weston and Trevor Watts on the European Free Improvisation Pages.

The Controindicazioni were initiated amongst others by the late Mario Schiano. If there's interest, I could maybe share the big 4CD package that was up on dime when Schiano died. It features Schiano, John Butcher, What We Live, Van Hove/Lovens, Sebi Tramontana/Lovens and others, in recordings from the 2002 and 2003 editions.

Thanks a lot to the original seeder on dime!

Colin Vallon Trio - Willisau 2008

Sorry for being slow with the promised dime shows... the first one's stored in my RS account now, but here's one more that I upped quite a while ago and never came around sharing!

Subject of this post is a great young piano trio, headed by Swiss pianist Colin Vallon. Vallon is a talent to watch, a great lyrical yet powerful player! There'll be a second show of his trio up here later, and if you want to hear more, his hatOLOGY release "Ailleurs" comes highly recommended!
The members of his trio are bassist Patrice Moret, who has a great natural sound, and non-conformist drummer Samuel Rohrer, whom I firmly believe is one of the very best drummers currently active in jazz! You'll have to witness him live to see his impressive flow of ideas and feel his playful swinging and joyful poly-rhythms, but I think some of it you can hear on this recording, too... hope you'll dig!

Give these three guys a chance, they absolutely deserve to be heard!

Veryan Weston - Bern 2003 (re-post)

This is a straight re-post from March 2008 - should be to the liking of the avant-heads... didn't find much interest back when it was posted first and I just had to re-up links #3 and #4! Hope there's an audience for this!

Another bit of improv, here's the promised show by Veryan Weston. This concert is one of six annual TonArt concerts taking place around x-mas. As far as I know, I did never share this before, quite certainly not on dime, either, so consider this a first!

Here's one I just got from dime - it needed a bit of editing and I thought why not share it here in the edited version. First foray into avantgarde music on this blog, I think... my taste is pretty broad, so don't think you know about it from what you see on this blog!

Domancich-Avenel-Goubert - Paris 2008

Before getting to work on the shows from my dime birthday party, there are a few things I uploaded to RS a while back but never came around sharing so far.

First of these is a show by the fine D.A.G. trio:
D is Sophia Domancich, who played with Bernard Lubat, Steve Lacy, Jean-Louis Chautemps, musicians Canterbury scene like Elton Dean, Hugh Hopper, and Pip Pyle, while also leading her own trio, featuring among others Paul Rogers and Tony Levin, and later Claude Tchamitchian and Simon Goubert. Domancich also held the piano chair in the Orchestre National de Jazz under Didier Levallet.
A is Jean-Jacques Avenel, the great bass player who spent many years with Steve Lacy's bands (from 1981 up to the end).
G is Simon Goubert, who has worked with far too many musicians to list them here, let's just mention Mal Waldron, René Urtreger, Joachim Kühn, Siegfried Kessler, Lee Konitz, Steve Grossman, James Carter, John Hicks, Martial Solal, and Christian Vander's "Magma".
Both Domancich and Goubert are part of the group "Soft Bounds", with Hugh Hopper and Simon Picard.
Goubert and Domancich regularly appear as a duo, for this radio session as well as a CD (2006) they added Jean-Jacques Avenel to the mix.

This show is from 2008, there's also a 2CD "Jazz Club" from 2006 as well as a "Jazz Club" by Soft Bounds (from 2004), in case there's demand - but both of them I didn't edit, I think, so it would be some work...

Freddie Hubbard/McCoy Tyner/Elvin Jones - Berlin 1987

This wraps up the Freddie Hubbard tribute here... and it again nicely fits the great drummers theme (see previous post), this time with the great Elvin Jones present! The concert was done in memory of John Coltrane, and with Tyner/Workman/Jones, the 1961 rhythm section of Coltrane's classic quartet is present here. Hubbard of course worked with Coltrane both on "Olé Coltrane" and on "Ascension". Sonny Fortune worked with Miles in the seventies and does his best filling the big gap left by Coltrane...

Here's the full list of Hubbard shows shared here in the past weeks:

Aldo Romano - Porquerolles 2008

Continuing the great drummers theme... check here, as well as these more recent posts featuring Max Roach, Joe Morello, Art Blakey, Tony Williams (both with Hubbard), Daniel Humair, Joe Chambers, Tony Williams again (with VSOP III), and Louis Moholo (with Keith Tippett & the MinAfric Orchestra)
The Freddie Hubbard shows also include Lenny White, Billy Cobham, Roy Haynes, and Louis Hayes, among others. Plenty of great drums, that was quite usual with Freddie!

Now here we have Aldo Romano, another of my favourite drummers, and next to Humair one of the main forces of modern jazz in France, or rather Europe more generally. Romano has played with so many musicians, it's impossible to even think of listing them all... just let me mention Don Cherry (some of the live recordings from the sixties are now available on ESP Disk), Keith Jarrett, Steve Lacy, Rolf & Joachim Kühn, Massimo Urbani, Michel Petrucciani, Joe Lovano, Philippe Catherine, Robin Kenyatta, Bill Dixon, François Jeanneau, and of course the great Romano-Sclavis-Texier trio.

In 2004, he won the renowned JazzPar price.

Here, Romano is leading his latest band (to be heard on the CAMJazz release "Just Jazz") with Mauro Negri on clarinet, long-standing buddy Henri Texier on bass, and the terrific alto player Géraldine Laurent - check out her Time Out Trio if you have a chance, she's really special!

#3 was #2 originally, I moved it not to disturb the flow of the music.

Note:
This was a broadcast presenting selections from Peterson's various Stuttgart appearances, hence the continuous segue between some titles from different sessions. That was how the radio station chose to present the music.
This was one of the earliest of SWR 2's "from the archives" series (broadcast in their "SWR Jazz Session" programme, which back then was a bit longer). They did similar compilations with music by Count Basie and Ella Fitzgerald.

Hans Koller with Lee Konitz & Lars Gullin - Freiburg 1956 / SWF Big Band (dir. Eddie Sauter) - Donaueschingen 1957

Here's a nice double feature centred on the late great Austrian tenor sax player, Hans Koller. He might be best known for his turn on Oscar Pettiford's great "Vienna Blues" album (Black Lion) with Attila Zoller and Jimmy Pratt, as well as for a run of fine albums on MPS spanning the 60s and early/mid 70s. Zo-Ko-So (with Lee Konitz and Martial Solal) is a stand-out, but all his MPS albums are fine!

Here he is at an earlier stage, from the days when he led the Hans Koller Quartett (with pianist Roland Kovac) as well as co-led a band with pianist Jutta Hipp (soon after to hit the USA with three fine albums on Blue Note). Koller's quartet is joined by two stellar guests, Lee Konitz and Lars Gullin, both among the finest and most individual voices on their respective instruments.

The second part features Hans Koller among the newly founded SWF Big Band of 1957, led by arranger Eddie Sauter. Among the other soloists to be heard are trumpet player Rolf Schneebiegl, trombonist Otto Bredl, Rudi Flierl on baritone, and Dave Hildinger on marimba and piano. The arrangements are quite... well, let me say the remind me of Kenton at his most bombastic... I know Sauter has his own story (about which I'm completely ignorant so far though, I've never heard anything by the Sauter-Finnegan orchestra, for instance).

*** blurb from swr2.de ***

The penultimate Hubbard show, another that features him with McCoy Tyner's trio, this time though without Joe Henderson (listen here).
This is in prime quality, though! Another one I got from dime, with thanks to the person who shared it there!
